Located in the west of Shanghai, Qingpu is a typical region of rives and lakes south of Yangtze River. Running from the Jiangsu and Zhejiang province, the waters in this region is part of Huangpu river valley and flow finally into the East Sea. The total coverage of rivers and lakes amounts 112.46 square kilometers, counting 16.65% of the entire land area. Altogether in Qingpu there are 1917 rivers, adding up to 2155.07 kilometers and 21 lakes with total coverage of 59.32 square kilometers. On the 675.1 square kilometers land, with hundreds of rivers running around villages and towns thousands of bridges cross over the clear water, Qingpu is a place full of favor of water region, with Dianshan Lake the most famous.

Originally named Xuedian Lake, Dianshan Lake got its present name in the late Song Dynasty. Enjoying its fame ever since ancient times, Sianshan Lake vovers 80 square li area, the water joins with that of Taihu Lake, run into Wusong River and finally meet the sea, blessing the surrounding area with its rich resources.

As the only naturally lakes zone in Shanghai, Dianshan Lake is located 15 kilometers west of Qingpu Town on the border of Kunshan and Qingpu County, connected with Yangcheng Lake in the north and Taihu Lake in the west. It is 15 km wide from east to west, and 30 km long from north to south, with a perimeter of around 100 km and coverage of 95,000 mou. With its deepest water level 3.59 meters, Dianshan Lake is 2.11 meters deep averagely and it irrigates the surrounding over 200,000 mou farm land, with its capacity of storing 90,000,000 cube meters. With over 60 rivers and branches of rivers around it, Dianshan Lake receives the water from Taihu Lake and joins the Huangpu River in the east throung Langlu Port and Liuhe River. Serving as the main source of water of Huangpu River, Dianshan Lake is the major inner river waterway from Shanghai to provinces of Jiangsi. Zhejiang and Anhui, with the deepest water level below –1.0 meter. It is also the largest fresh fish farm is Shanghai, the towns surrounding Dianshan Lake make the best of their geographical advantages and developed aquatic products industry with shrimp as its main product. Dianshan Lake is a typical “land of fish and rice” south of Yangtze River, which its abundant aquatic products of shrimps, crabs, fish and etc..

Dianshan Lake is also a tourist resort with charming sceneries. A large number of modern tourist facilities built around the lake such as: Daguanyan Garden, Golf course, Yachts club, aquatic sports spot, and Oriental Green Boat, etc., which has become the most famous Dianshan Lake tourist zone and resort area in Shanghai region.

The prominent Zhujiajiao, the thousand-year-old town, was constructed by hills and waters. The lakes have cradled over a thousand years civilization of Zhujiajiao. As a pearl by the Dianshan Lake, Zhujiajiao is known to the world by its style of “little bridges, and flowing river and dwellings” and its rich cultural heritage. It is a town of ancient flavor with rivers flowing below little bridges. The west half of the tourist zone, Shanghai Daguanyuan Garden was constructed according to what was described in the famous novel A Dream of Red Mansions, with over 20 scenic spots such as Daguanyuan, Yihongyuan, Xiaoxiangguan, Wuhengyuan and etc., which are exquisite in architecture, elegant in style, reeking the charm of ancient garden in Ming and Qing Dynasty. The national first-class aquatic training base—Shanghai Aquatic Playground was praised by Asian Boating League as the largest of its kind, with the most advanced facilities.

It is serene and beautiful inside the playground, with luxuriant trees, fragrant flowers and chanting birds.
